Attachment and Childcare

My observations lead me to conclude that
the conditions of poor and mediocre quality care of children affect the
essential trust between parent and child and therefore the attachment style
of the child. The interactions I have observed between...caregivers and
young children in center after center are typical of parenting patterns of
dismissing, preoccupied and disorganized AAI*
classifications
*AAI = Adult
Attachment Interview - A semi-structured interview that assesses whether
internal working models of attachment persist into adulthood.
Researchers using this tool argue that it is possible to see
mother-offspring patterns enduring from the previous generation into the
present generation.

Attachment and Childcare

Attachment & Child Developement, instituteforattachment.org, ©2002 |
The typical rate of pay (of daycare
workers) is below the poverty level. Many childcare workers work 9-10 hours
a day with no breaks. What AAI classification of adult do these working
conditions attract? The turnover rate is astronomical, thus depriving
infants and toddlers of the secure relationships so vital to their
development.

Government should not be in the business of
childcare, nor should it be encouraging parents to place young children in
care outside the home.
